Rejuvenated

Ominous gray clouds threaten to unleash a torrential downpour. We stare in stark disbelief at the heaviness of the cloud cover. Could this at last be the first rain of fall? We lick our lips in anticipation of the quenching that hovers just above us. With a loud crack, the sky answers our disbelief by flashing brilliantly successive streaks of light.

Mommy! Watch the sky! Don’t stop watching! It lights up! See!!

The thirsty ground greedily sucks up the first few drops of rain and waits breathlessly for more. Soon the clouds’ upheaval resembles flood-like inundation, and we begin a rain dance of joy. The great hole in the sky, as this area is often called, is deeply gorged with a leaden abundance of refreshing raindrops. The earth begins to smell deliciously of sodden clay, the musky tones of gleefully satiated soil. Abby reaches her hand skyward in an unintentional gesture of praise. She inches her face out from underneath the safety of the patio’s covering to feel it lusciously pelt her face. Giddy laughter echoes through us as we watch her race back and forth, in and out of nature’s shower.

Earth’s floor is happily quenched with these momentary drops, and our hearts are merrily rejuvenated again.

That was such a fun and wonderful memory for me as well. I'm so glad you've captured it and Abby's "praise" totally expresses it :)
